History of the Central Zakat Committee

CIOGC Committee was founded in 1997, as a committee of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC). Formal project definition was completed in 2001. It used to be called the Central Zakat Committee, and it was restructured in 2002 and a website was also launched in 2002. The Committee structure, its mission, and program were reviewed with various masajid and community organizations of the Greater Chicago area. Its mission is to institutionalize Zakat in the Greater Chicago area. Its scope and operating principle was defined as ‘local collection and local distribution’. Its name was changed subsequently to Zakat Chicago. Zakat Chicago does not compete with local mosques in collecting Zakat rather it aims to take a coordinated approach with all the participating organizations. Each participating organization which collects Zakat distributes its Zakat primarily to individuals in the community it supports, while Zakat Chicago supports projects in various communities that help deserving individuals. Alhamdulillah, Zakat Chicago, over the years, has steadily grown in the community support and recognition, as well as in expanding distribution of Zakat to various communities and projects. We hope and pray, and ask you to join in the prayer, that Allah helps it grow in its scope and succeed in its mission, insha-Allah.
